Vietnam's three chess players, including two male and one female, triumphed in the Zone 3.3 qualifying round of the World Chess Championships 2015 which wrapped up here on Sunday, each securing a berth to compete in the upcoming Chess World Cup 2015.

In the final match of the nine-set tournament on Sunday, Grandmaster Le Quang Liem (Elo 2676) held a draw with Philippines' Barbosa Oliver (Elo 2501), however he still ranked top of the tournament with 7.5 points and thus secured a berth to enter the upcoming chess world cup.

In addition, as champion of the tournament, Liem walked away with a cash prize of 2,000 U.S. dollars, out of the tournament's total prize of 10,000 U.S. dollars.

Meanwhile, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2659) defeated the Philippines' Torre Eugenio (Elo 2449) in the final set, becoming runner-up of the tournament with 7 points and bagging a prize worth 1,500 U.S. dollars besides securing a berth to the chess world cup.

In the women's event, IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen (Elo 2338) maintained her leading position throughout the tournament, winning over the Philippines' Suede Mikee Charlene (Elo 2085) in the final match and becoming champion with 7.5 points.

Besides securing the sole berth for women players in Zone 3.3 to compete in the chess world cup, Nguyen received a cash prize of 1,000 U.S. dollars.

The Zone 3.3 qualifying round of the World Chess Championships 2015 was held here from March 7 to March 15, with participation of 44 male and 20 female players coming from seven countries in the region.

Players each competed in nine sets upon Swiss system for three official berths (two for male and one for female players) to enter the finals of the Chess World Cup 2015, which is slated for September 10 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Endi
