2nd LD Writethru: Simasius claims victory in Lithuania's capital mayor election

Xinhua, March 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Candidate from Liberals' Movement of Lithuania Remigijus Simasius has claimed his victory in Sunday's Vilnius mayor election based on preliminary results.

Simasius claimed his victory when figures showed he secured about 60 percent of support, with his rival Arturas Zuokas, incumbent mayor and the leader of liberal party Lithuanian Freedom Union, won about 40 percent of votes.

"Yes, I do," he replied when BNS news agency asked on Sunday evening whether he felt he had won.

Simasius pointed out to local media that current financial state of Vilnius is a "mine field", and he would have to achieve goals set during the election campaign.

Preliminary results came out after about a third out of 151 voting districts were counted in Vilnius. Endit
