Lithuania's capital city of Vilnius is believed to have a new major, according to preliminary results of the elections on Sunday.

Remigijus Simasius, representing Liberals' Movement of Lithuania, is ahead of Arturas Zuokas, the incumbent mayor and the leader of liberal party Lithuanian Freedom Union.

Simasius secured nearly 60 percent of voters' support, in comparison to 40 percent in favor of Zuokas, the preliminary results showed after votes from nearly a third out of 151 voting districts were counted in Vilnius.

Lithuania held the second round of elections of majors on Sunday. It's the first time of direct elections of majors in the Baltic country. Endit
