11 killed in road accident in southern Algeria

As many as 11 people were killed on Sunday in a road accident in the southern Algerian province of Tamanrasset, local media reported.

The accident happened when a bus collided with a tractor-trailer in the locality of In Salah in Tamanrasset province, local media quoted a medical source and firefighting services as saying.

The bus was heading to Tamenrasset from the coastal province of Bejaia.

Such tragedies are not rare on highways linking the north and the south of the country. While it is still unclear why this tragedy occurred, over-speed, fatigue in night driving and lack of visibility are the common causes for such deadly accidents.

Last December, a collision between a bus and a truck near the province of Ghardaia, 700 km south of Algiers, killed 11, including nine Nigerian refugees who were on their way to be repatriated to their home country.

According to the National Gendarmerie Department, last year saw a total of 24,388 road accidents, in which 3,900 were killed and 44,546 others wounded. Endit
