Lithuania elects mayors in run-off of first direct elections

Xinhua, March 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

The second round of direct mayoral elections of Lithuania kicked off on Sunday, with around 2 million eligible voters being expected to cast their votes for their favorable candidates.

Liberal parties are the main participants of the battle for mayor seats in Lithuania's three largest cities -- Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda port-city. Social democrats who received the most support in the municipal elections two weeks ago are not being represented.

In Vilnius, Lithuanian capital city, Remigijus Simasius from Liberals' Movement of Lithuania is competing with Arturas Zuokas, current mayor of Vilnius and the leader of liberal party Lithuanian Freedom Union.

In Kaunas, Lithuania's second largest city, Andrius Kupcinskas, incumbent mayor representing the conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, is wrestling with Visvaldas Matijosaitis, local businessman and the leader of public election committee.

While in Klaipeda port-city, Vytautas Grubliauskas, incumbent mayor and his rival, and Agne Bilotaite, representing Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, are competing for the position.

According to the Central Electoral Commission, 4.11 percent of voters had already voted in the early voting earlier this week. Endi
