Zambian president undergoes successful medical procedure: official

Xinhua, March 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has undergone a successful medical procedure at a South African hospital, his office said in a statement obtained on Saturday. The Zambian leader underwent a successful medical procedure in theatre at a Pretoria Hospital to correct the tightening of his wind pipe which was causing sugar low sugar levels.

"Doctors have said the results of the procedure were good. The president has been asked to return for medical review in a few weeks' time," Amos Chanda, the presidential spokesperson said.

The statement added that both South African and Zambian doctors have expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the comprehensive medical attention the 58-year-old Zambian leader received.

The Zambian leader was flown to South Africa on Tuesday to undergo further medical examination following a recurrence of the narrowing of the windpipe which caused low sugar condition, with reports saying he collapsed while delivering remarks during the celebrations of the International Women's Day last Sunday.

The narrowing of the windpipe (known in medical circles as achalasia) first emerged 30 years ago and was corrected, his office had earlier said.

Lungu, elected president during the January presidential election necessitated by the death of his predecessor Michael Sata, said he was ready to step aside if doctors recommend that his health condition requires enough rest.

Lungu is serving the remaining term of Sata's reign before general elections next year. Endi
