EU expresses concern over Syria crisis

Xinhua, March 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) Commissioner for humanitarian aid & crisis management Christos Stylianides expressed concern over the worsening Syria crisis on Friday as it entered the fifth year this week.

According to Stylianides, 12.2 million people were in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in the country, increasing by nearly one third more than a year ago.

He stressed that "reaching these people is becoming increasingly challenging due to fighting," and criticized that parties to the conflict failed to respect International Humanitarian Law.

He also pointed out that over 3.8 million Syrian refugees who sought refuge in neighboring countries had put a huge strain on host communities, and called for the host countries continued to protect these refugees.

The Commissioner vowed that the EU cares and stands in solidarity with the people of Syria. Endit
