Indian Prime Minister seeks to strengthen relationship with Sri Lanka

Xinhua, March 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The scheduled visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka is seen as an attempt by India to strengthen its relationship with Sri Lanka.

In a statement issued earlier this week, the Indian Prime Minister said that he hoped his visit would make India's relations with Sri Lanka even stronger in the larger interest of the people of both countries.

"My visit comes after President Sirisena's visit to India during which substantial ground was covered on taking our ties forward. I am eagerly looking forward to meeting President Sirisena once again. Our ties with Sri Lanka have stood the test of time. We have a shared history, heritage and values," he said adding on a lighter note "And yes, both our Nations share a love for cricket."

Modi, who is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on Friday morning for a three day official visit, will hold a series of meetings in Colombo before he travels to the Tamil dominated Northern province, followed by the ancient city of Anuradhapura and the tourist city of Kandy. Endi
