Tokyo shares end higher with Nikkei hitting 15-year high

Tokyo shares ended sharply higher Thursday with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index hitting a nearly 15-year higher due to optimism toward the Japanese economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average skyrocketed 267.59 points, or 1.43 percent, from Wednesday at 18,991.11, after climbing as high as 19,008.13 points, the highest intraday level since April, 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 20.96 points, or 1.37 percent, at 1, 546.63.

Gainers were led by insurance, air transport and real estate.

The turnover was about 2,522.6 billion yen (about 20.74 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
