Tokyo stocks rise 0.31 pct on economy optimism

Tokyo stocks rose 0.31 percent Wednesday on optimism over Japanese economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 58.41 points, from Tuesday at 18,723.52. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 0.92 point, or 0.06 percent, higher at 1,525.67.

Major gaining industry sectors included air transport, construction and pharmaceuticals.

The turnover was 2,261.0 billion yen (18.63 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
