Three militants killed in western Algeria

Xinhua, March 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Algerian army troops Tuesday killed three militants and recovered two Kalashnikov machine guns in an operation carried out in the province of Ain Defla, 145 km west of Algiers.

Citing a Defense Ministry statement, the APS news agency reported that the operation was led by a division of the People's National Army in the 1st Military Region, as three gunmen were ambushed and killed in Tagrara, while two Kalashnikov machine guns, a quantity of munitions, mobile phones and binoculars were recovered.

Despite remarkable improvement of the security situation in Algeria, the government said numbers of al-Qaeda-linked militants are still active.

Parallel with the fight against terrorism, Algiers has launched a reconciliation policy in 1999 encouraging militants to lay down their arms in exchange for fair trials in civilian courts.

In the meantime, the counterterrorism strategy is still underway. Endit
