IAEA calls for expedited process to verify Iran's nuclear program

Xinhua, March 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN nuclear agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Tuesday called for an expedited process to verify Iran's nuclear plans.

"The Agency stresses the need to expedite the existing process in the framework for cooperation," an IAEA statement noted.

Following meetings with Iranian negotiators last month, officials from both sides discussed issues surrounding verification of Iran's nuclear program on Monday. The next meeting will be held mid-April.

The IAEA says Tehran is not handing over key information on unresolved issues while Iran claims IAEA is being misled by unverified intelligence from western spy agencies.

However, the IAEA said it made progress in the latest round of meetings with Iran.

"They (IAEA and Iran) further exchanged information on two remaining practical measures," the statement said.

Iran, China, the United States, France, Germany, Russia and Britain are trying to strike a deal to put an end to the decade-old issue of Iran's nuclear plans.

Western states suspect Iran of developing a nuclear bomb while the latter insists its nuclear plans are for peaceful purposes. Endit
