Regional force recaptures 2 Boko Haram strongholds in Nigeria

Xinhua, March 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A vast offensive led by Nigerien and Chadian troops recaptured Nigeria's Damasak and Malafatori localities situated near the border, sources in Niamey said Monday.

A local private radio station which made the revelations, said fighting for the control of the two Boko Haram strongholds had left many of the Islamists dead while other terrorists fled due to the fire-power of the Nigerien and Chadian forces.

During the same offensive against Boko Haram, 29 soldiers who included six Nigeriens and 23 Chadians were injured and admitted at Diffa regional hospital.

At the same time, hundreds of the terrorist group's accomplices were arrested in Nigerien towns of Nguigmi and Bosso near the border with Nigeria.

Security sources said hundreds of Nigerien and Chadian soldiers took part in the offensive that was launched on Sunday morning from Niger's southeast regions of Diffa and Bosso which in recent months had come under persistent Boko Haram attacks.

While visiting Diffa region on Feb. 22, 2015, Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou said he was convinced Niger will emerge victorious in the ongoing war.

"Boko Haram has no future," the president vowed. Endi
