Xinhua, March 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least eight people from a marriage party were killed and 19 others injured Tuesday after a passenger vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in India, officials said.

The accident took place early Tuesday at 3:10 a.m. (local time) in north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

According to India's official broadcaster - All India Radio ( AIR), the overcrowded pick-up vehicle carrying about 30 people rolled down a 250-feet deep gorge near Batrwah village of Chamba district.

"The van was coming from nearby Galai village when the accident happened," the broadcaster said.

The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained and police officials quoting injured passengers said the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp curve in hill terrain.

Reports said eight bodies were retrieved from the spot and injured persons have been sent to zonal Hospital at Chamba. Endi
