Four Ugandan athletes to compete at world Islamic weightlifting games

Xinhua, March 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A team of four athletes and three officials left on Tuesday to represent Uganda at the World Islamic Weightlifting Games in Turkey.

The team was flagged off by President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, William Blick and Dominic Otuchet, a Committee member.

Charles Ssekaaya, the team captain said that they are determined to perform well and carry the Ugandan flag high.

"We are prepared to perform to the best of our expectations owing to the tremendous effort and time we have invested in training," said Ssekaaya.

The Games that run March 12-17 will feature 26 nations. Turkey as hosts are fielding 32 athletes.

"Our chances of winning the overall award may be slim because we only have four participants compared to Turkey's 32," said Salim Musoke, president of Uganda Weightlifting Federation.

The defending champion of the event is Saudi Arabia, who have won the event since its inception in 2011. The other countries expected to send teams include Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Kenya, Nigeria, Morocco and Sudan among others.
