Iran's Assembly of Experts elects new chief

Iran's Assembly of Experts Tuesday elected Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi as the new chief of the deliberative body of 86 Iran's Mujtahids (Islamic scholars).

Yazdi, who replaced deceased Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi-Kani, won 47 in favor out of 73 votes in the meeting of the assembly.

The newly elected chief served as the head of Judiciary System of Iran between 1989 and 1999.

The Iran's Assembly of Experts is charged with electing and removing the Supreme Leader of Iran and supervising his activities. Endit
