Bulgarian customs seize nearly 9.5 kg of heroin

Xinhua, March 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs at the Malko Tarnovo checkpoint have seized 9.474 kg of heroin hidden in a secret compartment into the gas bottle of a car entering from Turkey, officials said Monday.

The drug, split into nine packets, was found after a thorough inspection, the National Customs Agency said in a press release.

The car was registered in Bulgaria. Its driver, a Bulgarian citizen, was detained.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 480,000 U.S. dollars.

The Balkan country is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. In 2014, Bulgaria seized more than 1 tonne of heroin, 50 tonnes of marijuana, 0.1 tonne of cocaine and half a tonne of synthetic drugs. Endit
