8 people killed as roof collapsed in E. Afghanistan

Eight people, including women and children, lost their lives as the roof of a house collapsed in Shirzad district of the eastern Nangarhar province early on Saturday, spokesman for the provincial government Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said. "Due to heavy rain the roof a house collapsed in Walisa village of Shirzad district in the wee hours of Saturday, killing eight persons including women and children and injuring two others," Abdulzai told reporters here.

All the victims belonged to the families of two brothers who used to live in the same house, the official added.

Four more houses were damaged in the neighboring Khogyani district due to rain but caused no loss of life, the official further said.

Major parts of Afghanistan have been the scene of heavy snowfall, rain and avalanches over the past one month. According to officials, the natural disasters especially snow-storms and avalanches have claimed the lives of more than 300 people, 200 of them in mountainous Panjshir province, 80 km north of Kabul.
