Spanish housing sales increase by 9.6 pct in Jan.

Spanish housing sales increased by 9.6 percent in January in comparison with the same month in 2014, the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported on Friday.

A total of 33,416 operations were registered in the first month of the year, the highest figure since February 2013, according to the INE.

Sales of second-hand houses increased by 50.8 percent to a total of 24,413 operations in January, while sales of new houses decreased by 37.1 percent in comparison with a year earlier to a total of 9,003 operations.

The INE reported that sales of non-subsidized houses rose by 10.4 percent to 29,667, accounting for 88.8 percent of the total, while sales of subsidized houses rose by 3.3 percent to a total of 3,749 purchases, representing 11.2 percent of the total.

Housing sales in Spain have been rising for five consecutive months on a year-on-year basis, the INE said. Endit
