India investigates lynching of rape suspect in jail

Xinhua, March 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Indian government on Friday launched an investigation into the lynching of a rape suspect in the northeast state of Nagaland by a mob who stormed a jail on Thursday and killed the man, reportedly an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh.

The central government has asked the Nagaland state government to furnish a detailed report on a rape accused being killed in Dimapur, the capital of the state, said Indo-Asian News Service.

Authorities have also imposed a curfew in Nagaland and neighboring Assam state to prevent communal violence from breaking out.

On Thursday, a mob broke into the Central Jail in Dimapur, where the rape suspect was lodged, and beat him to death after dragging him out. The man had allegedly raped a local girl last month.

Local TV reports said among the mob were students, who overpowered security personnel at the jail when they lynched the man by hanging him on a lamppost.

Police said they have got the video of the incident and were identifying who the attackers were.

The incident took place one day after the BBC broadcast a controversial documentary on the 2012 Delhi gang rape, in which one of the rapists were interviewed.

The Indian government has banned the documentary. Endi
