Xinhua, March 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

The second International Electric Vehicle Expo (IEVE) kicked off on South Korea's popular vacation spot Jeju island on Friday, attracting around 70 electric vehicles (EVs)-related companies worldwide.

The expo, hosted by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Environment and Jeju special self- governing province and held at the Jeju International Convention Center, will last for 10 days from March 6 to March 15 under the theme of "E-mobility and Green Communities".

A total of 14 EVs manufacturers including BMW, Nissan, Hyundai Motor Group, Kia Motors, GM Korea Co., Renault Samsung Motors Co., Detroit Electric, BYD Auto Co. and others have showed their latest EVs on the expo.

Global battery suppliers, charging Infrastructure producers and other manufacturing companies that produce parts related to EVs have also participated in the expo to show their new technologies and services. Several forums, lectures and seminars will be held during the next ten days.

"I hope this expo will bring more opportunities to look into the new trend of EVs industries, to advance new life style and to inspire great ideas," said Won Hee-ryong, governor of Jeju special self-governing province.

Won added that Jeju works towards all vehicles here being electric by 2030. Although the island has only a little more than 850 electric vehicle registered in 2014, the local government aims to increase the number of EVs to 371,000 units by 2030 as the island has been selected as a testing district of EV early in 2011.

BYD Co., Ltd., China's rising electric vehicle manufacturer, also attended the expo for the first time. Its popular products BYD e6 electric taxi and SUV have drew lots of public attention on the expo.

"It is a good chance for BYD to know more about the South Korean market. We also want to find a suitable way of cooperation between BYD and S. Korean companies," said Liu Xueliang, the General Manager of the Asia-Pacific Region of BYD, adding that South Korea is an ideal country for developing EVs due to its government policies and the general public's environmental awareness.
