A movement named HeForShe to promote gender equality in Vietnam has been launched by the United Nations (UN) Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) here on Friday.
HeForShe is a global effort to encourage all sectors of society, particularly male leaders, to join and express their support to gender equality, according to the UN Women.
Gender equality is not and must not only be a women's issue, which requires every man and boy to take action against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls, Pratibha Mehta, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, said at the opening ceremony of the movement.
Speaking at the event, UN Women Country Representative in Vietnam, Shoko Ishikawa, stressed that boys and girls are not born with gender-stereotyped behavior. HeForShe aims to rebuild the relationship between men and women to make it equal.
A report by UN Vietnam in 2013 acknowledged that 58 percent of women in Vietnam experience some type of emotional, physical or sexual domestic violence during their lifetime. Endi
