Xinhua, March 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

A senior district official was executed by militants in Afghanistan's eastern province of Wardak on Friday, the latest in a string of targeted killing, an official source said. "Ezatullah Khan, Sayyed Abad District chief executive, was martyred by armed rebels on Friday morning,"the provincial government said in a statement.

Late Khan, 26, was kidnapped by militants on Tuesday in Sayyed Abad, but the killing took place in the neighboring Chak-i-Wardak district on Friday, according to the statement.

The civilians considered to be supporting government, civilian government employees, religious leaders, tribal elders and persons involved in peace and reconciliation efforts came under attack in targeted killings.

Taliban insurgent group mostly claims responsibility for targeted attacks.

Abdul Majid Khogyani, the acting provincial governor, strongly condemned the execution in the province with Maidan Shar as its capital, 35 km west of Afghan capital of Kabul.

Nearly 3,700 civilians were killed and more than 6,800 others wounded in conflicts and Taliban-led attacks in 2014, according to official figures released by UN mission in the country.

The officials blamed the attacks of Taliban and other armed groups for vast majority of the civilian deaths and injuries. Endi
