Phelps could be reinstated for World Championships

Xinhua, March 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Michael Phelps, the all-time records for 18 Olympic gold medals, may be handed a chance to compete at FINA World Championships this summer in Russia after his six-month ban from competition ends in April.

However, USA Swimming was considering that Phelps may be allowed to participate at the meet in Russia.

"It's complicated, but there are ways in which it could happen," USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said recently, according to ESPN. "There's a pathway for things to be reconsidered .. or considered."

Phelps was arrested in 2014 for driving under the influence, at which point he received a one-year suspended sentence and 18 months probation. He is banned from drinking alcohol and ordered to attend an addiction treatment center, and USA Swimming also banned him from attending the global championships in Kazan, Russia, from Aug. 2-9.

Phelps, 22-time US Olympic medalist, apologized for drunk driving and promised to make amends.

In 2008 Beijing Olympics, Phelps went a perfect 8-for-8 in gold medals, taking the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Endite
