Corinthians beat defending Libertadores champions San Lorenzo

Xinhua, March 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Brazil international midfielder Elias scored a stunning solo goal as Corinthians defeated defending champions San Lorenzo in their Copa Libertadores group match on Wednesday.

Elias gave the visitors the lead just after the hour when he took possession at the halfway line and split the Argentine side's defence with a careering run. His fierce shot into the top corner left Sebastian Torrico with no chance.

The result at the Nuevo Gasometro lifted the Brazilian side to the top of Group 2 with six points from two matches.

San Lorenzo, third with three points, must win their next match away to Sao Paulo if they are to progress to the knockout phase.

Corinthians coach Tite paid tribute to both teams after the match, admitting his side barely deserved victory.

"A draw would have been the most fitting result," Tite said. "We had some injuries and we had to modify 50% of our team structure. That's why the team deserves credit. It was difficult."

In other matches on Wednesday, Chile's Colo Colo won 2-0 at home to Atlas of Mexico and Brazil's Internacional beat Ecuador's Emelec 3-2. Endi
