A senior official at Indonesia's Environment and Forestry Ministry said on Wednesday that government has set programs aimed to save lakes across the nation before the hosting of 16th World Lake Conference (WLC) slated for 2016 in Indonesia's resort island of Bali.
The ministry's deputy minister for environment damage and climate change affairs Arief Yuwono said that the programs would be implemented through national action plans, already submitted with the National Mid-Haul Development Plan (RPJMN) from 2015 to 2019.
"The programs were stipulated in the Water Resiliency Priority agenda. It would be conducted by implementing the national action plans in 15 lakes prioritized in the program. We urge agencies, regional administration and communities to support the program so as to revitalize the ecosystem in those lakes and improving the welfare of people living around those lakes," Arif told a media briefing held in his office.
Arif said that lakes play crucial roles in the life of Indonesian people as they have been a close part in their daily life that influence people's way to earn their living, fulfill their basic needs and contributed the making of traditional culture and local wisdom in the community.
"Somehow some lakes in the nation are facing degradation of their environment qualities at present," he said.
The World lake Conference (WLC) is a biennial international event to share experiences of countries and experts in preserving the environment sustainability of lakes in the world. WLC was initiated by Japan-based International Lake Environment Committee Foundation (ILEC) with initial event held in Japan in 1984. Endi
