Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100GMT, March 3

Tokyo shares ended mixed Tuesday with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index closing slightly lower due to profit-taking, but the downside was limited by bullish sentiment.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average inched down 11.72 points, or 0.06 percent, from Monday at 18,815.16.

The turnover was about 2,418.0 billion yen (about 20.20 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks fell 184.66 points, or 0.74 percent, to close on Tuesday at 24,702.78 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,663.43 and 24, 984.62. Turnover totaled 79.87 billion HK dollars (about 10.3 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Tuesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 4. 57 points, or 0.23 percent, to 2,001.38 at the close. Trading volume stood at 440.89 million shares worth 5.3 trillion won (4.83 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market closed weaker on Tuesday after the central bank kept interest rates on hold causing stocks to slide from seven-year highs.

At the official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 25 points, or 0.42 percent, at 5,933.9, while the broader All Ordinaries index had fallen 23.5 points, or 0.4 percent, to 5, 902.8.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Tuesday up 0.12 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 1.76 points to 1,421.22. A total of 142,618 shares worth about 982 million Lao kip (about 121,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed higher Tuesday with the weighted index up 4.41 points, or 0.04 percent, to close at 9, 605.77, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 84.35 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 2.69 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 596.72 points on Tuesday, up 5.99 points, or 1.01 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 112.826 million shares worth 1.944 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (90.61 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 157 stocks went up, 71 stocks fell down, while 59 stocks remained unchanged.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 627.27 points, up 10.22 points, or 1.66 percent.

A total of 48.260 million shares worth 957.08 billion VND (44. 60 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Tuesday.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.03 percent higher on Tuesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 2.59 points to 7776.51. The all-share index went up by 0.28 points, or 0.006 percent, to 4525.07.

Trading volume reached 1.24 billion shares worth 6.72 billion pesos (152.28 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,821.25 up 4.12 points or 0.23 percent, and the Emas was at 12,518.00 up 13.17 points or 0.11 percent.

Turnover increased to 2.83 billion shares valued at 2.35 billion ringgit Malaysia (647.74 million U.S. dollars), compared with 2.25 billion shares valued at 2.19 billion ringgit Malaysia ( 602.97 million U.S. dollars) on Monday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 18.22 points, or 0.54 percent, to close at 3,422.11.

A total of 1.31 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 17 billion Singapore dollars (861 million U.S. dollars).

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 3.21 points, or 0. 06 percent, to a level of 5,474.62 on Tuesday.

Some 251,046 transactions were booked, involving 7.07 billion shares worth 7.11 trillion rupiah (about 548.53 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Tuesday moved down 19.30 points, or 1.22 percent to close at 1,562.84 points.

Some 19.97 billion shares worth 60.89 billion baht (about 1.89 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands. Endi
