The United States and Israel disagree on how to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, but their alliance is "stronger than ever," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said here Monday.

The potential deal on Iran's nuclear program that world powers and Iran are negotiating "could threaten the survival of Israel", Netanyahu said at the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, adding that he has a "moral obligation" to speak up in the face of the dangers to the Israelis. GENEVA -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said here on Monday he welcomed "tangible progress" in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached in Minsk last month, saying "the ceasefire is being consolidated, heavy weapons are withdrawn."

In a speech delivered to the opening of the 28th Human Rights Council session, the Russian FM said the problem in Ukraine is "of effective concern", since "there's been an increase within the activities of ultra-radical groups." (Russia-FM-Ukraine)

BAGHDAD -- At least 73 people were killed in battle on Monday during a U.S.-led coalition airstrike in western Iraq and in a major offensive against Islamic State (IS) militants, a security source said.

In Iraq's northern central province of Salahudin, Iraqi security forces started a major offensive in the early morning hours against IS militants aiming to recapture key cities and towns seized by IS in the province, a source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. (Iraq-IS)

GENEVA -- The estimated number of people killed in eastern Ukraine since conflict began there in April 2014 is believed to have now surpassed 6,000, the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) announced Monday.

The OHCHR added that the escalation in fighting in recent weeks, particularly near Donetsk airport and in the Debaltseve area, resulted in hundreds of deaths, both civilian and military, in spite of successive ceasefire agreement attempts. (UN-Report-Ukraine) Endi
