Ghana searches for international friendly opponents

Xinhua, March 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is in search of new teams to replace Nigeria for its proposed friendly game on March 29 after FIFA canceled the much-anticipated friendly last week.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier announced that the Super Eagles would play Bolivia on March 26 in Uyo, and then take on the Black Stars on March 29 in London. But the friendly has now been stymied.

World football governing body FIFA last Friday ruled against the match, citing a breach of the regulation that bars teams from playing on two different continents within a traveling time of more than five hours and five days.

The regulation has affected the high profile game which would have formed part of Ghana's preparation towards the 2017 qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to kick- start in June.

Ibrahim Saanie Daara, the GFA Spokesman, confirmed that Ghana was working hard to arrange two friendly matches against yet-to-be- named opponents on the FIFA free dates for Africa.

"We want to play two matches because the FIFA free window for Africa for this month allows for two matches to be played," Daara told a local radio station.

Ghana wants to play African opponents to strengthen its side before the start of the qualifiers and a decision will be made by the end of this week.

The Black Stars placed second at the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea. Endite
