Singapore, Malaysia to enhance defence cooperation

Singapore and Malaysia have agreed to enhance cooperation on the defense establishments.

A Letter of Intent to enhance defense cooperation between the neighboring countries, and reaffirm both countries' commitment to multilateral frameworks was signed during Malaysian Defense Minister Dato' Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein visit to Singapore from March 1 to 2, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) announced on Monday.

Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and his counterpart also committed to cooperate in the domain of maritime security.

Both countries affirmed support for Malaysia's proposal to enhance naval cooperation through coordinated maritime patrols within each country's own territorial waters.

They have released a joint statement to further affirm the close cooperation between both militaries in non-traditional security areas, military-to-military exchanges to address regional security concerns, and the value of the Malacca Strait Patrol in enhancing the security of the Straits of Malaysia and Singapore.

They also reaffirmed their countries' long-standing commitment to the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus,
