Two militants were killed in a gunfight with Indian troops in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday.
The gunfight between the militants and Indian troops broke out Friday night at village Ratsuna of Tral in Pulwama district, about 42 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.
"Two militants were gunned down last night here," a senior police official posted at Tral said. "The gunfight broke out after militants fired upon the search parties triggering a gunfight that proved fatal for them."
Officials said neither Indian police, nor the troopers suffered any damage in the stand-off.
According to police spokesman, joint contingents of military and police cordoned off the area following intelligence inputs suggesting presence of militants.
The slain militants were identified as local cadres of the region's indigenous militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).
Police claimed recovery of two assault rifles from the gunfight site.
This is second gunfight in the last three days.
On Wednesday two militants of HM were killed, while four Indian military troopers including an officer were wounded in a fierce gunfight in the neighbouring Shopian district.
Last week also two militants were killed in a similar gunfight in the region.
Militant groups are engaged in guerrilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989.
Gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Endi
