Czech President mourns shooting victims

Xinhua, February 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Czech President Milos Zeman stopped briefly in the small town of Uhersky Brod on Friday evening to pay tribute to the victims of Tuesday's shooting.

Zeman laid flowers and lit a candle at the memorial place outside the restaurant where the attack happened.

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said he would also pay his respects to the victims. Sobotka did not disclose the exact time of his arrival in the town located in southeastern part of the country, saying it is not an event for media.

A 63-year-old gunman named Zdenek Kovar shot dead eight people and then killed himself on February 24 in the local Druzba restaurant.

His family issued a statement on Friday to express their deep sympathy to the families of the victims.

They said in the statement that Zdenek visited them for the last time at the funeral of their father 12 years ago, and then he stopped visiting the family and refused any contact. He lost his job and had become withdrawn. His family said they knew nothing about his life.

In response to the attack, Czech Interior Ministry said it would come up with an analysis of the status on possession of firearm licenses and possibly propose an amendment to the rules. Enditem
