UN humanitarian chief to visit Jordan, Lebanon

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos will be on mission in Jordan and Lebanon on March 2-6, where she is expected to discuss the impact of Syrian crisis with senior government officials and other parties, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced here Friday.

"In Amman, she will address the regional World Humanitarian Summit consultations," Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here, referring to the first-ever global humanitarian summit to be convened by the UN secretary-general in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2016.

"In both countries, she is expected to meet with senior officials, key humanitarian partners and donors to discuss the impact of the Syrian crisis," Dujarric said.

The Syrian crisis, which broke out in March 2011, led to a massive influx of Syrian refugees into Syria's neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon.

"The Syrian refugee crisis has overwhelmed existing response capacities, with 3.8 million registered in the neighboring countries," UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres said in his briefing to the UN Security Council on Thursday. "Lebanon and Jordan have seen their populations grow, in the space of a few years, to a point they were prepared to reach only in several decades. And Turkey has now become the biggest refugee-hosting country in the world." Endite
