Landslide kills 2 in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, February 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two people were killed and two others injured after a landslide triggered by incessant rains hit their vehicle in Indian- controlled Kashmir, officials said Friday.

Landslide hit the vehicle at Sherbibi near Banihal town of mountainous Ramban district, about 160 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two people were killed last evening when a van carrying them was hit by a massive landslide, pushing it to roll down about 150 feet in Bichleri River," a police officer posted at Banihal said. "On receiving information about the accident, a rescue team was rushed to the spot which evacuated two people in injured condition. "

Police said that they have retrieved one body and search for the another was going on.

The vehicle, according to police officers coming from Jammu city, was on way to Verinag town.

For the past three days incessant rains lashed the region, triggering landslides at Banihal on 298 km-long Srinagar-Jammu highway.

Indian-controlled Kashmir has a rugged terrain. Landslides and avalanches are often triggered from its mountains during frequent rains and heavy snowfall the region receives. Endi
