15 injured as 5.8 magnitude earthquake hits Pakistan

Xinhua, February 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 15 people were injured and over 20 houses collapsed when an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude jolted parts of north, northeast and northwest Pakistan Friday morning, local media reported.

Din News said that Battagram district in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was the worst hit area where 15 people including kids were injured in separate incidents of house collapse.

The injured people were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

The earthquake's epicenter was determined in Baffa area, located some 92 kilometers north of the country's capital Islamabad, at the depth of 32 kilometers.

The quake that lasted for three to five seconds, caused panic among the people who rushed out of their homes in fear.

Friday's quake's epicenter was very close to the area which caused a 7.6 magnitude quake in 2005, killing at least 75,000 people.

Pakistan's north and northwest areas are located in one of the most seismically hazardous zones with high vulnerability to earthquakes.

Geographically, Pakistan lies in the collision zone of the India tectonic plate to the south and the Eurasian plate to the north. Endi
