Xinhua, February 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a two-day visit here on March 9 and 10 and is expected to hold talks with her Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, the Japanese government top spokesman said Friday.

Yoshihide Suga said that Merkel, in her first visit to the country in seven years, will meet Abe on March 9 on issues including counterterrorism, crisis in Ukraine and bilateral relations.

Suga said that Merkel is "one of the most important leaders in the European Union" and added that it is "extremely important" for the two governments to intensify their cooperation.

Merkel last visited Japan in 2008 for a Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido. Endi
