Record number of immigrants arrive in New Zealand

Xinhua, February 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The net gain of migrants measured by more arrivals than departures in New Zealand hit an all-time high last month, the government statistics agency announced on Thursday.

The net gain of 5,500 migrants in January exceeded the previous record of 5,200 in October 2014 and was the third time in six months that the previous record of 4,700 in February had been exceeded, according to Statistics New Zealand.

The annual net gain of 53,800 migrants in the year to the end of January was up significantly on the 25,700 in the January 2014 year.

It was the sixth month in a row that the annual record for a net gain of migrants has been broken and was driven by a record 111,500 arrivals.

New Zealand's biggest net gain of migrants in the January year was from India at 10,800, with more than three quarters of them arriving on student visas.

The other biggest net gains in migrants were from China (7,600), the United Kingdom (5,100) and the Philippines (3,800). Endi
