In a response to recent shootings in Uhersky Brod, the Czech Interior Ministry plans to enable doctors to have direct access to the arms registry to check whether their patients hold a firearm license, the ministry said Wednesday.
At present, the information about such license holders in the Czech Republic are only known by general practitioners who issue a certificate on health capability to applicants for a firearm license.
The Interior Ministry also plans to expand police powers to immediately seize firearms and a license from a person sent for an extraordinary medical checkup.
In the Czech Republic, applicants for a firearm license must meet basic conditions including Czech citizenship, a minimum age, health capability, legal capacity, a clean criminal record and reliability.
Then they must pass a special exam consisting of a theoretical and a practical part. The police can revoke their firearm license if holders fail to meet any of the required conditions.

Czech Regional police chief Jaromir Tkadlecek said on Wednesday that the investigation of the incident would last from weeks to months.
