Number of jobless in France falls 0.5 pct in Jan.

France's unemployment figures stood at 3.48 million in January, down 0.5 percent from a month earlier for the first time since August 2014, official data showed Wednesday.

According to the labor ministry's monthly report, 19,100 fewer jobless claims were recorded last month in France's mainland compared to December.

On a yearly basis, the figure rose by 4.8 percent.

"We must remain cautious and observe over time the monthly developments. The fight against unemployment will not be weakened and will be vigorously pursued," the ministry said.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls hailed the "encouraging step which will restore confidence in France's economy." Enditem
