Tokyo shares ended the choppy Wednesday slightly lower as selling took the upper hands on profit-taking.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, which stopped it five-day climb, inched down 18.28 points, or 0.10 percent, from Tuesday at 18,585.20 after briefly hitting 18,648.77, the highest intraday level since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 0.66 point, or 0.04 percent, at 1, 507.62.

The turnover was about 2,439.6 billion yen (about 20.55 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 14.35 points, or 0.73 percent, to 1,990.47 at the close. Trading volume stood at 360.3 million shares worth 4.83 trillion won (4.4 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed up 0.72 percent on Wednesday with the weighted index up 70.17 points at 9,699.54, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 96.14 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.05 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

- - - - VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Wednesday with composite index unchanged at 1,411.89.

A total of 96,245 shares worth about 645 million Lao kip (about 80,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks moved up 28.21 points, or 0.11 percent, to close on Wednesday at 24,778.28 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,691.78 and 24, 869.37. Turnover totaled 71.38 billion HK dollars (about 9.2 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 85.66 points on Wednesday, down 0.73 points or 0. 84 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 53.64 million shares worth 668.913 billion Vietnamese dong (31.33 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange, an increase of 108.9 percent in volume and 102.5 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 592.66 points on Wednesday, down 4.29 points or 0.72 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 99.237 million shares worth 1.754 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (81.75 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 619.44 points, down 4.73 points or 0.76 percent.

A total of 38.759 million shares worth 816.79 billion VND (38. 06 million U.S. dollars) were traded Wednesday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares moved up 27.79 points, or 0.51 percent, to close at 5,445.11 on Wednesday.

Some 240,429 transactions were booked, involving 6.13 billion shares worth 7.10 trillion rupiah (about 550.55 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 3.22 points, or 0. 09 percent, to close at 3,440.83.
