1st LD Writethru: Sonia Gandhi may step down as India's main opposition Congress party chief next month

Xinhua, February 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sonia Gandhi is likely to step down as India's main opposition Congress party chief next month, local TV channels reported Wednesday.

Sonia Gandhi, who has been heading the party since 1998, will be replaced by for her son and Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi at the next month's meeting of All India Congress Committee, the " NDTV" news channel reported, quoting party sources.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Congress party.

Her 44-year-old son Rahul, who is the party's vice president, is currently facing severe criticism for taking a sabbatical from politics at a time when the budget session is going on in the Indian Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi, the fourth generation of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and grandson of India's first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has been blamed for a series of electoral defeats as head of the party's election campaign panel. Endi
