Indian foreign secretary to visit Pakistan next week

Xinhua, February 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar will visit Pakistan next week when embarking on a tour of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries to promote cricket diplomacy, said the Ministry of External Affairs here Wednesday.

The trip, also called "SAARC yatra (pilgrim), will start with Bhutan Sunday and end in Pakistan on March 3, said the Ministry of External Affairs.

This could signal the resumption of India-Pakistan talks at foreign secretarial level suspended by India last year.

The decision to send Jaishankar to Pakistan was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he spoke to other SAARC leaders ahead of the Cricket World Cup earlier this month.

Modi had informed Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif that he would be sending the new foreign secretary to Pakistan.

India suspended talks with Pakistan last July due to Islamabad' s contacts with separatists in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Endi
