Hundreds attend funeral of Copenhagen shootings' victim

Some 750 people on Tuesday attended the funeral for one of two men killed during the Copenhagen shootings that occurred mid-February, Copenhagen police said.

Family and friends, along with a number of politicians, gathered in Grundtvig's Church in Copenhagen to bid farewell to Finn Noergaard, a 55-year-old Danish film director who lost his life in a terror attack on Feb. 14 that targeted a debate on freedom of speech at the Krudttoenden cafe in the Danish capital.

The avenue up to the church was barricaded, and there was massive police presence in the area. Nine policemen with machine guns blocked the road, while many others patrolled the wayside closer to the church.

Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Liberal Party leader Lars Loekke Rasmussen, and Copenhagen Lord Mayor Frank Jensen were among the attendees.

Known primarily for making documentaries, one of Noergaard's best known works was a 2004 film about a young Australian boomerang thrower.

Noergaard's family has established a fund in his name for the benefit of vulnerable children and young people and asked people to donate money to the fund in lieu of sending flowers.

"It can be for example in relation to the integration of immigrants and descendants in Denmark, or for other initiatives that create benefits for children and young people who need it," the fund wrote on its website.

The fund will distribute money each year on Feb. 14, the anniversary of Finn Norgaard's death.

The funeral for the second victim, Dan Uzan, took place at the Mosaiske Vestre Jewish cemetery in Copenhagen on Feb. 18. Endit
