Indonesia mulls postponement of weaponry purchase amid death row with Brazil

Xinhua, February 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Indonesian government said on Monday that it was considering the postponement of purchase of weaponry from Brazil amid a row of execution of drug smugglers.

"We are reconsidering our plan to buy weaponry from Brazil," Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said.

The announcement was made after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff postponed the presentation of credentials by Indonesia's new ambassador Toto Riyanto in Brasilia on Friday.

The postponement is viewed as a protest against the recent execution of a Brazilian drug offender in Indonesia.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry has responded angrily to Brazil 's decision by recalling its ambassador-designate Riyanto.

Kalla said Indonesia will go ahead with implementation of death penalty on two Australians of the "Bali Nine" drug trafficking ring, who are due to be executed this month, despite protest from Australia. Endi
