Gunfight between militants, troops rages in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, February 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

A gunfight between militants and Indian troops Saturday broke out in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The gunfight erupted at Thakgund village of Rafiabad in Baramulla district, about 60 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"The gunfight has started at Thakgund village of Rafiabad this morning," said a police official posted in the area. "Troops of Indian army and police are jointly trying to take on militants present there."

Reports said two militants are believed to be in the area.

Officials said troops cordoned off the area following intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the area.

The exchange of gunfire between holed-up militants and troops was going on until last reports came in.

"We would share details once the gunfight is concluded," the police official said. A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian- controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region. Endi
