Ukraine okays formation of joint military unit with Poland, Lithuania

Xinhua, February 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Friday approved a law on establishment of a joint military force between Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania, the presidential press service said in a statement.

The law, ratified by the Ukrainian parliament earlier this month, stipulates that the three-nation military brigade will be involved in various international operations under the mandate of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

The military unit, which would be funded through the state budgets of its member countries, will be headquartered in the city of Lublin, eastern Poland, about 100 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Petro Mekhed said that a total of 545 Ukrainian soldiers will serve in the 4,400-men brigade.

Last September, Ukrainian, Polish and Lithuanian defense ministers signed an intergovernmental treaty on establishing a joint military brigade. The deal allows other states to join the three-nation alliance under the agreement of the founding countries. Endite
