Finnish president approves same-sex marriage law

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto on Friday signed and confirmed a law that makes same-sex marriages legal in Finland, Finnish national broadcaster Yle reported.

The law will go into effect on March 1, 2017.

Now that the law is confirmed by the president, the Finnish Ministry of Justice will start to amend other national legislation, reported Yle.

The broadcaster also said a variety of social and health entitlements need be re-examined, as the law will endow legal status to same-sex couples.

The Finnish Parliament approved the same-sex marriage bill last November, making Finland the last Nordic country to legalize such marriages. Endit
