Spain, France inaugurate high-tension line

Xinhua, February 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his French counterpart Manuel Valls were present for the inauguration on Friday of a new high-tension connection between their two nations.

The 65 km connection, which stretches between Santa Llogaia on the Spanish side of the order and Baixas, will double the amount of electricity which is able to travel between the two countries to 2,800 MegaWatts when the line becomes fully operational in July.

This means the two nations are now closer to the target of being able to transfer 10 percent of their electrical capacity, from one to the other. This target should have been reached in 2005 and last year saw the European Commission raise that target to 15 percent of capacity by 2030.

As a result of these goals the new connection is considered vital to help assure the stability of the Spanish electrical system, as well as the development of sustainable and renewable energy sources. Endit
