British PM extends greetings for Chinese New Year

Xinhua, February 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday published a video message to extend his greetings for the Chinese Lunar New Year, traditionally known as the Spring Festival.

Cameron hailed the economic, trade and educational relations between Britain and China in the video message published Thursday on the official website of Downing Street.

He said the number of British goods bought in China has doubled since he came to office.

"We often think of Chinese food, technology and clothing - they're a big part of our lives in Britain - but today, it works both ways," the prime minister said.

"Look at China's supermarkets and you'll see British salmon, British whisky. Look at China's roads and you'll see Jaguars, Land Rovers (JLR). In fact, China is JLR's biggest market," he added.

Referring to British brands popular in China, he continued: "Where are their shoppers visiting? Burberry, Church's, Costa. And what are they watching? Yes, Downton Abbey, which draws in a reported 160 million viewers in China."

He noted that the strength of that relationship of cooperation could also be felt in Britain.

"I think of Heathrow Airport, Thames Water, made stronger thanks to Chinese business people who invest here," he said.

"Our universities, made greater thanks to the 100,000 Chinese students who study here. And our country, made better thanks to British Chinese people who make such a great contribution to our culture, communities, businesses and public services," he elaborated.

"So wherever you are, let me wish you the very best health and happiness for this, the Year of the Sheep," said the prime minister, before concluding his message with the Chinese catchphrase "Xin nian kuai le (Happy Chinese New Year)." Enditem
