AU to observe elections in the Union of Comoros

Xinhua, February 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

As the Union of Comoros prepares for its parliamentary elections run-off to be held on 22 Feb. 2015, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has approved the deployment of an AU election observation mission (AUEOM) to the Union of Comoros.

The short-term observers led by Jean Omer Beriziky, former transition prime minister of Madagascar will arrive in the country on 17 Feb. to observe electoral and post electoral periods up to 27 Feb., said AU in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement recalled that the parliamentary elections first round in Comoros, which took place on 25 January 2015, represent an important step towards stable representative institutions and a successful national reconciliation process and democratization in the country.

The AUEOM's assessment of the electoral process is independent, said the statement, adding its purpose is to offer an impartial assessment of the elections and their compliance with the Union of Comoros' international and regional commitments with regard to democratic elections, as well as with laws governing elections in the Union of Comoros.

The AUEOM has a mandate to observe and report on the electoral process in the Union of Comoros and will operate in accordance with relevant AU instruments on democracy and elections, noted the statement.

The AUEOM will issue its preliminary findings and conclusions shortly after the election day, said the statement.

A final report with recommendations for future improvement of elections in the Union of Comoros will be published within two months after the elections, according to the statement. Endi
